All variations of Post & Rail Fencing Post and rail: post and rail covers several different types of fence Nailed post and rail, traditionally used as fencing for fields and paddocks, it can be done with square posts and softwood rails, or square posts and ½ round softwood rails. Cleft chestnut post and rail, sometimes known as Sussex fencing, it comprises of attractive cleft (split) chestnut rails and either square posts or cleft chestnut posts. Cleft chestnut can have 2 or 3 rails and is a very attractive fence as either a boundary to paddocks or separation from different parts of a garden. *All of these can be baked with wire mesh to keep smaller animals in or out.   Stake & Rail (below) A cost effective alternative to post and rail is stake and rail. half round stakes are driven in to the ground and the rails are nailed to the  stakes. *This can be baked with wire mesh to keep smaller animals in or out.   Permanent & temporary electric fencing (top of page) In some situations a permanent electric fence can be added to existing fences to protect them from rubbing and cribbing. A length of wire is run through isolators attached to the existing or new posts and a mains energizer is connected. Equifence Stock Fence Metal wire mesh, stretched between timber stakes Metal estate railings Estate fencing has a classic style that everyone associates with large country parks and rural estates. Modern railings are galvanised and treated black so should not need regular maintenance.  *This can be baked with wire mesh to keep smaller animals in or out.   Stud rails Stud rail has long been used in the equestrian world as an alternative to timber post and rail fencing. Once erected and strained up this type of fence requires minimal upkeep and looks good for years.  Stud rail is: Safe for animals, Chew resistant, Minimal maintenance, clean appearance, No painting or treatment required and no corrosion or rust.
